The effluent or supernatant leaving the clarifiers is now ready for disinfection. Disinfection is achieved through a chemical process called chlorination. Chlorine gas is injected and destroys harmful pathogenic bacteria viruses (typhoid, cholera, and hepatitis).
The Covington WRF disinfects all processed effluent with chlorine. Treated water is used for a majority of plant wash water.
Using effluent as ‘wash water’ saves millions of gallons of potable water each year!
