COVID-19 Update: A Message from Local Health Professionals

Today, local leadership participated in a conference call with Dr. Little, Chief Medical Officer for Piedmont Newton Hospital and Dr. Audrey Arona, Director of the Gwinnett, Newton, Rockdale Department of Public Health.

April 03, 2020

The primary goal was to gain knowledge straight from local professionals that could benefit first responders and others in high exposure areas, but a few take-aways that might be of interest to the general public:

There is one confirmed death in Newton County related to COVID-19.

Doctors are encouraged cases in our community are relatively low compared to other areas in Georgia and that is in part attributed to citizens following the stay at home order, practicing social distancing and good hygiene.

Piedmont Newton hospital is currently expanding ICU bed space in the hospital, should it become needed. Currently, there are 10 ICU beds.

There are some patients that are COVID-19 positive, but don’t require hospitalization. Some of those patients, may not have a place to isolate, but the state has set up some locations for them to shelter. The GNR DPH is partnering with closed hotels to house some of those patients as well.
