With one of the largest fireworks shows in the southeast, there's a specific traffic plan set in place to facilitate the exodus of thousands of attendees from Covington.

Independence in the Park Traffic Plan
PLEASE NOTE: The way you traveled to the event may not be the route you take home. Please consider this in choosing to park. Intersections will begin to close at 8 p.m.
The Square will begin closing to traffic and parking at 2 p.m. with a full closure complete at 4 p.m. except Church Street entering the Square will close at 9 a.m. on 7/4/2024. Parking is allowed in legal on street parking and public lots that are outside of the Square closure or fireworks fallout zone which will be marked with signage.
The below map is an overview of the intersections and areas where there will be specific traffic patterns in Covington for the evening of July 4, 2024. Each number on the map corresponds with the list of map/instructions below it.

Travel east or west on College Avenue outside of the Square closure

Floyd Street from Elm Street is one way, traveling east only, up to East Street

Southbound traffic lane on Elm Street between Ace Hardware & Floyd Street is closed

Northbound lane of Elm Street will be open, allowing turns on College Avenue, Floyd Street or Williams Street

Traffic cannot travel on Pace Street south of Williams Street towards the Square
-
Traffic is not allowed on Williams Street between Pace and Elm Streets
-
No travel in Elm Street’s southbound lane.

Northbound lane of Elm Street may travel towards Hwy. 278 and turn eastbound (right) ONLY on Hwy. 278 or turn east on Williams Street.
3. HWY. 278 / EMORY / PACE / ELM
- Hwy. 278 will be WESTBOUND TRAFFIC ONLY west of Pace Street.

Hwy. 278 will be EASTBOUND TRAFFIC ONLY between Pace Street and Elm Street/Alcovy Road.

Both lanes of Pace Street will be used for northbound travel to Hwy. 278 just south of Williams Street. Left lane MUST turn west (left) on Hwy. 278; right lane MUST turn east (right) on Hwy. 278

No travel in Emory Street’s southbound lane

Traffic traveling north on Emory Street towards Hwy. 278 will only be allowed to turn west (left) on Hwy. 278

Newton Plaza

To travel WEST out of Newton Plaza on Hwy. 278, use the Pace Street exit or any exit west of it. You will not be allowed to turn east from these exits. You may proceed west on Hwy. 278 or turn north on Emory Street (Hwy. 81).

To travel EAST out of Newton Plaza on Hwy. 278, use the exits east of the Pace Street entrance/exit. Eastbound traffic leaving Newton Plaza on Hwy. 278 MUST turn north (left) on Elm Street/Alcovy Road.

Northbound lane of Elm Street may travel towards Hwy. 278 and turn eastbound (right) ONLY on Hwy. 278 or turn east on Williams Street.

Traffic will only be allowed to travel northbound on Elm Street/Alcovy Road.

Traffic leaving Covington Corners Shopping Center may only turn left/north onto Elm St./ Alcovy Road.

Traffic coming southbound on Alcovy Road MUST turn right onto Herring Street.
5. HWY. 278 / HERRING / WEST ST.
- Hwy. 278 will be WESTBOUND TRAFFIC ONLY west of Emory Street

Traffic will not be allowed to turn eastbound on Herring Street. Traffic coming off Herring Street may turn north or south. Southbound traffic then MUST turn right onto Old Atlanta Hwy.

Traffic traveling southbound on West Street (north of Hwy. 278) must turn west on Hwy. 278. No traffic from West Street (south of Hwy. 278) will be allowed on Hwy. 278

No traffic will be allowed to travel southbound on Hwy. 81 out of Oxford past West Street. Southbound traffic must turn onto West Street.

West Street traffic will only be allowed to turn northbound (left) onto Hwy. 81/N. Emory St.

Hwy. 278 will be WESTBOUND TRAFFIC ONLY between west of Pace Street. NO EASTBOUND TRAFFIC IS ALLOWED.

Traffic traveling eastbound on Hwy. 278 from the Access Road must turn left onto the I-20 ramp or south (right) onto Turner Lake Road

Westbound traffic will only be allowed on Clark Street. No eastbound traffic is allowed.

Traffic from Clark Street must go north on Turner Lake Road

Southbound traffic on Turner Lake Road may only continue southbound on Turner Lake Road at the roundabout

Northbound traffic on Turner Lake Road may only continue northbound on Turner Lake Road at the roundabout

Traffic traveling in the southbound lane, south of the roundabout, on Turner Lake Road MUST divert to Brown Bridge Road

Traffic coming from Brown Bridge Road may only turn south (right) on Turner Lake Road.

Traffic coming from Washington Street on Turner Lake Road may only turn west (left) onto Brown Bridge Road. Traffic may not proceed north on Turner Lake Road from this point.

Traffic traveling in the southbound lane, south of the roundabout, on Turner Lake Road MUST divert to Brown Bridge Road

Traffic coming from Brown Bridge Road may only turn south (right) on Turner Lake Road.

Traffic coming from Washington Street on Turner Lake Road may only turn west (left) onto Brown Bridge Road. Traffic may not proceed north on Turner Lake Road from this point.
11. CLARK ST. / WASHINGTON ST. CORRIDOR

The eastbound lane of Clark Street between West Street and Emory Street will be closed. Traffic can flow westbound only.

At the intersection of Emory St. and Washington St., traffic on Emory Street may only turn west (left) onto Washington Street. Traffic traveling east on Washington Street may only turn south (right) on Emory Street.

At the intersection of Emory St. and Clark St., NO NORTH, EAST OR SOUTHBOUND TRAFFIC IS ALLOWED. Traffic may only flow west on Clark.

At the intersection of Emory St. and Washington St., NO NORTHBOUND traffic is allowed toward Hwy. 278.
12. CHURCH ST. / IVY ST. / MONTICELLO ST.

No traffic will be allowed to travel north on Church Street towards the Square at the intersection of Jackson Hwy. and Church St.

Traffic traveling north on Monticello Street from Jackson Hwy. must turn west (left) on Ivy Street.

Traffic traveling east on Ivy St. must turn south (right) on Monticello St.
13. JACKSON HWY. / HWY 36. / COVINGTON BYPASS
- Traffic cannot come into Covington via Jackson Hwy. / Hwy. 36. Northbound traffic MUST turn left or right at the intersection of Hwy. 36 and the Bypass.
- Traffic on the Bypass may travel east and west or may turn south on Hwy. 36 towards Jackson but no traffic is allowed to turn onto Jackson Hwy. towards Covington.

Traffic may not turn south on Mill Street from Hwy. 278
