Motorized Golf Cart Information
As of August 3, 2020, changes have been made to the current City of Covington Golf Cart ordinance 10.18.030 (OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS) OF CHAPTER 10.18 (MOTORIZED CARTS).
GOLF CART APPLICATION
It will now be required that occupants of the motorized cart use seat belts. Insurance coverage is also required in order to maintain your permit. Please see the code sections listed below.
The ordinance does not allow the driving of motorized carts on sidewalks or along specially designated streets that can be referenced by maps available for inspection at the Covington Police Department. There's also a list of prohibited streets in the Golf Cart Application.
Operation of motorized carts in the city shall comply in every respect with the requirements of Georgia law, including, without limitation, the provisions of O.C.G.A. Sections 40-6-330 and 40-6-331, and all other statutory regulations applicable to vehicular traffic and safety equipment.
Minimum Liability Insurance requirements of O.G.C.A 33-7-11 (a)(1)(A) Not less than $25,000.00 because of bodily injury to or death of one person in any one accident, and, subject to such limit for one person, $50,000.00 because of bodily injury or death of two or more persons in any one accident, and $25,000.00 because of injury to or destruction of property. (25-50-25).
All current golf cart permit holders have until October 1, 2020 to come into compliance with these new regulations. New golf cart permit applicants must meet these requirements as of August 3, 2020. Enforcement of these ordinances will begin on October 1, 2020.
Only persons with a valid drivers license or instruction permit may operate golf carts on city streets. Golf cart owners wishing to drive their carts on city streets must register them with CPD where they will be issued identification decals to be affixed to the sides of their cart. There is a registration fee of $15 for each cart.
Owners wanting to download the application can do so by Golf Cart Application. The permit must be returned to the Covington Police Department at 13183 Harland Drive, Covington, GA 30014 for registration.
On May 24, 2009 the city’s golf cart ordinance was revised to allow residents to drive golf carts around the square and into neighborhoods north of U.S. Highway 278. The city council approved the first reading of an ordinance change that would allow golf carts with permits to drive on city streets and state routes where the speed limit is 35 mph or less. A list of golf cart prohibited streets can be found in the Golf Cart Application.
